Kelowna’s History: The Gold Rush, Cattle Drivers and the Orchard Industry
Although fur traders trekked through the Kelowna region as early as the first part of the nineteenth century, the area was not inhabited until 1860 when Father Pandosy and two other missionaries set up a mission. Due to the Cariboo gold rush in 1862, more and more people started passing through Kelowna, going north. They were followed by ranchers driving cattle north to mining camps. Eventually, these ranchers realized that Kelowna was a nature-rich, abundant area, and it made more sense to set up their ranches there.
Kelowna is also known for its orchard industry which was first set up in 1890 by Lord Aberdeen who later became Governor-General of Canada. So the city has gone from a thoroughfare for gold miners and cattlemen to a place known for its abundance of orchards. Kelowna has now grown in a culture-rich city featuring a six-block Cultural District downtown and renowned not only for its orchards but also its vineyards..
